A contaminated scuba fill can look and smell exactly like a clean one, which is what makes bad diving gas so easy to miss. The first sign is often a headache or nausea that hits a diver at depth, once the gas is already being breathed.

So how do you catch bad gas before you sell it?

What Does "Bad Diving Gas" Actually Mean?

Bad diving gas has almost nothing to do with age. Sealed air and Nitrox barely change inside a properly stored cylinder, so a fill does not turn dangerous just because it has sat for a few months. Gas goes bad when something contaminates it or the blend is wrong, and that fault is almost always there from the moment the cylinder is filled.

In practice, bad gas comes down to seven problems:

  • Contaminated air

  • An incorrect oxygen percentage

  • Excess moisture

  • Oil contamination

  • Carbon monoxide

  • Carbon dioxide

  • An incorrect Nitrox or Trimix blend

Every one of these comes from how the gas was produced and blended, not how long it has been in the tank. That is why a cylinder needs to be checked before it goes to a diver, even when it has been stored carefully in a clean, dry space.

Can You Tell If Diving Gas Has Gone Bad?

Your senses catch a few of these problems, but the most important ones need an instrument. Smell and taste can flag gross contamination like oil or fumes, which is why the "sniff test" (opening the valve and smelling the gas) is a good first check. Carbon monoxide, oxygen percentage, moisture, and carbon dioxide give a nose nothing to work with.

Carbon monoxide is the reason a sniff test alone is never quite enough. CO is colorless, odorless, and tasteless, so a tank can smell perfectly clean and still be off. Catching it takes an electronic CO detector or a color-indicating device.

Oxygen is the same story. A Nitrox blend that is a few points off will not smell any different, but it changes the maximum operating depth (MOD) a diver can safely plan for.

How Dive Centers Check Gas Quality

A good dive center does not assume gas is clean just because it came out of a compressor. Before a filled cylinder is sold to a diver, its quality is checked and protected in four main ways:

1. Breathing Air Testing

Breathing air testing is how a center catches what the senses cannot. Regular breathing air quality testing checks the compressed air for carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, moisture, and oil vapor. Most centers test against a recognized breathing air standard to confirm the air is clean enough to breathe.

2. Oxygen Analysis

Every Nitrox cylinder is analyzed before it leaves the fill station. An oxygen analyzer confirms the mix matches the intended blend, so the cylinder can be labeled with the correct oxygen percentage and MOD. Good operators also let divers verify the mix themselves before the dive.

3. Regular Equipment Maintenance

A test is only as reliable as the equipment behind it. Compressors, filters, and oxygen sensors wear over time, so a center services them on schedule and replaces filters and sensors when they are due. Well-kept equipment is what keeps both the air and the readings trustworthy. 

4. Following Recognized Standards

Professional dive operations work to a set standard rather than judging each fill by feel. EN 12021 is the recognized standard for breathing air, setting the acceptable limit for each contaminant, and an operation that pairs it with routine testing, clear labeling, and recorded maintenance holds every cylinder to the same benchmark. 

How to Prevent Contaminated Diving Gas

The best way to protect divers is to stop contamination before it ever reaches a cylinder. Testing tells an operator when something is already wrong, but the habits below prevent most problems from starting:

1. Maintain Your Compressor Regularly

Most breathing gas contamination starts at the breathing air compressor, so servicing it on the manufacturer's schedule is the single biggest preventive step. Routine inspections, oil changes, and worn-part replacement keep the compressor running clean and lower the chance of oil or carbon monoxide reaching the air supply. 

2. Keep the Compressor Intake Clean

A compressor can only make clean air if it draws in clean air. The intake should sit well away from vehicle exhaust, generators, and fuel storage, since a poorly placed intake can feed contaminants into every cylinder filled that day.

3. Replace Filters on Schedule

Compressor filtration removes moisture, oil vapor, and other contaminants from compressed air, but filters have a limited service life. Replacing filter cartridges at the recommended intervals helps maintain breathing air quality and prevents contaminants from passing through the system.

4. Stop the Fill if Something Smells Off 

A fill should stop the moment there is an oily or chemical smell at the compressor or intake. Catching a bad fill at that point protects every cylinder in the queue, which is why clean fill logs and a tidy, well-ventilated fill room are part of good prevention.

Can scuba air go bad?

Not from storage alone. Compressed breathing air does not expire, but scuba air can become unsafe if it is contaminated with carbon monoxide, oil vapor, or excess moisture during filling. Gas quality should be confirmed by maintenance and testing, not by the age of the fill.

Does Nitrox expire?

No. Nitrox does not expire in a properly maintained cylinder. Even so, the oxygen concentration should be analyzed before every dive to confirm the mix matches the label, especially if the cylinder has sat for a while or its contents are unknown.

Can you smell contaminated diving gas?

Sometimes, but not always. An oily or foul odor can point to oil contamination or a poorly maintained compressor, but the most dangerous contaminant, carbon monoxide, is colorless and odorless. The only reliable way to confirm gas quality is proper air quality testing and analysis.

How often should breathing air be tested?

Testing frequency depends on local regulations and how much the system is used. Many dive centers work to a standard such as EN 12021 and run routine breathing air quality tests as part of regular maintenance. Air should also be tested after any change to the compressor system or whenever contamination is suspected.

Can an oxygen analyzer detect carbon monoxide?

No. An oxygen analyzer only measures the oxygen concentration in a mix, so it cannot detect carbon monoxide, oil vapor, moisture, or carbon dioxide. Catching those needs dedicated breathing air quality testing or a separate CO monitor.
