An oxygen analyser measures the percentage of oxygen in a breathing gas mixture. It is used by divers to verify that a cylinder contains the correct gas blend before a dive. This is essential when using enriched air (nitrox), as breathing a mix with the wrong oxygen percentage can affect safe depth limits and create serious health risks.

Even when a cylinder has been labelled by a fill station, verifying the oxygen content yourself is considered best practice and is required by most training agencies. Gas blending errors can occur, and the only way to be certain of what you are breathing is to analyse it yourself. An oxygen analyser gives you that confidence in seconds.

Nitrox is a breathing gas mixture containing more oxygen than standard air (which contains 20.9% oxygen). Common nitrox blends range from 32% to 40% oxygen. A higher oxygen percentage allows for reduced nitrogen absorption and shorter decompression stops, but it also lowers the maximum operating depth. Knowing the exact oxygen percentage is essential for calculating a safe depth limit before every dive.
